“Should I be concerned with your crew in my home?”

Who will be working in your home once the job is started? Will you be home watching the crew the entire time? Is your family’s safety or personal possessions of concern? These are all excellent questions most buyers of contracting services never ask. Sadly, there have been numerous documented cases around the country where employees of a hired contractor have burglarized, injured, or even killed the very customers who hired the company they worked for. What’s worse, it was later found, in most cases, that the bad employee had a criminal background that was unknown to the employer. Most painting contractors have no idea about the backgrounds of their employees. Why? Maybe it never crossed their mind. Perhaps they don’t understand the risk to both their company and to their customers. Possibly the cost of doing background checks is just too much for them. The bottom line is, if you hire a contractor, make absolutely sure they have a strict hiring policy that includes criminal background checks.

The Smoke and Mirror Tricks

Contractors can tell you they have worked with everyone on their crew for the last 42 years, but how do you really know? They can tell you they just hired Jimmy-Bob, but they have known him for 14 years, but again, how do you know? Some will even tell you that they do background checks, when they really don’t. Ask the name of the company that provides the services, or ask to see examples of the reports they provide. If they don’t do them, chances are you won’t hear from the contractor again. That could be a good thing.
